Lessons can be booked in units of one hour, one and a half hours or two hours. The length and the frequency of lessons really depends upon what precisely needs to be accomplished and also on the student’s personal learning style. Gary King firmly believes that a tutor and his student are a team. Each member of the team has his or her part to play and it is vital that both parties contribute to the success of each lesson. Gary does not lecture his students but teaches them by immersion; that is, students learn by doing, by listening, by watching, by imitating, by verbalizing and by writing. At the end of each lesson a student will clearly recognize what he or she has accomplished. Students are expected to come to each lesson having thought about precisely what they feel they need to learn or what it is they need to prepare.

As an example, a typical mathematics lesson would consist of:
  • A review of what was learned in the previous lesson,
  • A discussion of the learning objectives for the lesson,
  • Forming strategies and solutions to problems that the student has brought to the lesson,
  • Solving extension problems related to the topic under discussion,
  • Allowing the student the opportunity to verbalize solutions to problems and translate this into logically presented written work,
  • Ensuring that the student’s level of understanding is sufficient for the level of instruction being given,
  • Setting a homework assignment that will reinforce what has been learned and engage the student in further practice.
  • Constructive feedback to both students and parents.
