Gary King: Director and Founder – profile

Gary King was educated in England and was awarded the honors degree in mathematics from the University of London. Subsequently, he was awarded the post-graduate degree, with distinction, in mathematics education from the University of London Institute of Education, specializing in the teaching and learning of mathematics at the secondary age level. In addition to teaching mathematics at a large inner-London Comprehensive Secondary School he was also Dean of Students and ultimately became the Head of Upper School.

Gary moved to New York City in 1983 when he was appointed Head of the Mathematics Faculty at the Anglo-American International School. In 1990 he was appointed Chair of the Mathematics Department at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, a position that he held for 10 years. Seeking to widen his experience as an international educator, Gary moved to Thailand in 2000 to take up the position of Assistant Principal (Academics) at the prestigious Bangkok Patana School, the British International School in Thailand. At Patana he supervised the work of 10 Heads of Faculty and directed the academic program and the strategic development of the curriculum. Gary has long considered New York City to be his home and upon his return he established his extremely successful and sought after educational consultancy, King Academics.

In addition to sharing his love of mathematics with classes of students and groups of teachers from all over the world, Gary has long been a mathematics tutor of the highest caliber. He firmly believes that the opportunity of having individual instruction can make an enormous difference to a student’s level of understanding and subsequent test performance. Whether a student needs need help with basic algebra or AP Calculus, Gary’s wealth of experience and knowledge will enable the student to improve his or her skills, increase his or her confidence and get better grades.

Gary had not been working in New York for very long when students and their parents began to ask him to help them with their preparation for the SAT. For the past 25 years Gary has helped hundreds of students to prepare for the SAT. He tutors students in both the mathematics and critical reading (verbal) sections and teaches students the craft of timed essay writing. He has developed his own specialized techniques for standardized test preparation – he does not teach lots of gimmicky tricks but rather instills in each of his students a systematic and logical approach to each type of question. Gary also provides expert tuition for the ACT and a wide variety of other standardized tests. His love of language is infectious and his careful and supportive guidance has enabled many students to produce fascinating and successful college and university entrance essays.
